The fire festival known as Beltane in modern Western paganism kicks off the beginning of the solar half of the Wheel of the Year. Beltane welcomes light back after the dark of winter has passed. While Beltane is a fertility festival, we need not approach it literally. At Beltane, we welcome new life and a fresh perspective. We are fertile with new ventures, ideas, goals and dreams. At this time, we honor this time of new beginnings and usher in the new opportunities that await.
Here's a simple Beltane ritual that you can perform:
-
Gather some flowers and greenery, such as daisies, lilies, or ferns, and arrange them in a circle on the ground. This can be inside or outside.
-
Light a candle or a small fire in the center of the circle, and say a prayer or intention for the Beltane season.
-
Stand facing the fire or candle, and visualize your intentions for the coming season. This could be anything from new beginnings, to growth, to abundance and prosperity.
-
Take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to connect with the energy of Beltane. Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, and the energy of the earth beneath your feet.
-
As you stand there, hold your hands out in front of you and say the following words:
"May the power of (Beltane, your chosen deity, ancestor etc.) fill me with new life and vitality. May the blessings of the season be with me always, and may I be open to receiving the abundance and joy that this time of year brings."
-
When you're finished, thank the energy of Beltane and extinguish the candle or fire.
-
Finally, take the flowers and greenery from the circle and scatter them around your home or garden, as a way of spreading the blessings of Beltane throughout your life.
*Alternatively, take the flowers and greenery and burn it in a fire-safe receptacle with something to extinguish the flames just in case. Allow the fire to burn down completely, add water just in case, then spread the remains around your dwelling.
Remember, this is just a simple ritual that you can adapt to suit your own needs and beliefs. You can add in any elements that feel right for you, such as music, dance, or additional prayers and invocations. The most important thing is to connect with the energy of the season and allow it to nourish and support you in the coming months.
Beltane Blessings!
